I will be traveling the the Netherlands in March to visit my son. I have my flight booked. Still looking for a hotel. If anyone has any information on good hotels for maybe around $100.00 per night, and also wondering how much to budget for meals. We would probably be eating 2 meals per day, maybe get stuff for sandwiches, would rather spend on other things, but looking to visit a nice restaurant maybe 2 or 3 times. I would appreciate any information on how much I should budget per day for food. Thank you

An interesting option for the traveller on a budget is the university of Amsterdam restaurant, also called a mensa, at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 237. For less than 10 euros you can get a decent (if you're lucky quite nice) meal right in the middle of Amsterdam. And that's just a little bit more than a fast food "meal".

There's loads of little restaurant in downtown Amsterdam, walk away from any major street, avoid places which clearly advertise in English http://www.iens.nl/zoek-een-restaurant/index.php?searchType=extended&group=101&area=0&search=&kitchen=0&price_operator=%3C%3D&price=20&ok=Zoek&groups=&private=&kitchen_table= is a listing of restaurants from the leading dutch review sites for restaurants. Prices under 20 euros. Any restaurant will post it's menu outside allowing you a look. Hidden charges are relatively rare, usually what you see is what you get. Service is included but, if you get good customer service a 5-10% tip is normal.

I always recommend this place to visitors: http://www.iens.nl/restaurant/23577/amsterdam-blauw-amsterdam it's a rather nice Indonesian restaurant and decently priced.

Hotels... booking.com is an idea. Your budget would put you either in something basic or somewhere in the suburbs. Here's a tourist guide to Amsterdam's public transport: http://www.gvb.nl/english/travellers/touristguide/english/Pages/welcome.aspx which runs very frequently from 0600 until about midnight.

I would say that you could find restaurants with meals around 10 euro, drinks cost extra.

Hotels you could find around 100 euro, maybe a bed & breakfast is also an option. There are also apartments were you can cook your own meal. That's maybe a good option if you want to make your own breakfast/lunch.

The tourist information can give you a lot of suggestions. Make sure you google for reviews. The experience from other travelers can help you make your choice. For example you can rent an apartment for 40 euro a person a night: http://www.iamsterdam.com/en/placestogo/aaa-shortstay-amsterdam-apartments/85eee59a-8267-4b46-b2b8-0daa723aa3ad

Look for more info on the tourist information site under accommodation.

The tourist information has a very good site:

Travel books like Lonely planet or the Rough guide offer a lot of good suggestions, maps, places to go etc. Maybe your library has one. They have also an internet site with limited information:

In Amsterdam you can eat from cheap to expensive. I found a site with restaurants that serve meals around € 10. The drinks will make your bill more expensive. There is also a list with pizza restaurants. Most pizza restaurants sell also cheap pizza's and most of them deliver pizza's.

Hotels have often internet deals. Compare also the reviews, some hotels are cheap but are maybe noisy or dirty.

Here some sites you could visit to find a good deal.

Hi, glad that you're going to Holland.

To answer your question, to begin with, please note that Amsterdam can be quite expensive compared to other Dutch cities. Amsterdam is of course not only the capital of the Netherlands, but also the main tourist attraction, so you can expect to pay (much) higher than you would in other cities.

As for the hotel, you can go to www.booking.com which is a Dutch company and they're very reliable. They should have great deals for you.

As for food, there are plenty of good restaurants in Amsterdam (it's a tourist destination of course), so it won't be that difficult to find one according to your budget. Please note that you should convert your US Dollars to Euros in case you want to pay for stuff in the Netherlands. Hope this helps
