Are Dutch people really that tall?

On average then it's true that the Dutch are arguably the tallest nation in the world with men averaging 6 ft +1⁄2 in and women 5 ft 7 in. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height#Average_height_around_the_world



However you have to remember that an average is just that, and there are people who are both taller and smaller. However it is noticable when visiting other countries. I'm 5ft10 and don't really stand out, yet when I visit certain other countries I can walk down the streets and easily look over the shoulders of many people, so yes I do notice the difference.



For example my old next door neighbour was 2nd generation Indonesian and was tiny (probably around the 5ft mark), so there is a wide range of heights here.

It's official - the people of The Netherlands are the modern days tallest people in the world. So the question is why are the Dutch so tall - and why are they still growing??? 1 in every 1000 young Dutch men is over 2 metres or 6 foot 6 and-a-half inches tall. The reason is good well-being and successful system of health service. Could be also because the land was often under the sea so dutch people had to stand up to the necks in the water - and those who were taller could survive - and now this gene is being transferred from one generation to another:)

Some years ago, I was working in an airport, of a Greek island.

We had flights from : UK,Netherlands,Iceland,Denmark,Sweden,Scotland,Ireland,Italy,Czech Republic,Slovakia,Slovenia,Serbia,Germany,Austria,Belgium,Cyprus,Israel,Finland and Norway....



I could easy recognise Dutch people by two factors.One of them was the height (I am 1.75 (5'9'') and I felt short infront of them (i am a female,btw)...



(the second was the light orange or light green t-shirts)

Yes we are! My son, for example, he's 15 years old, is 2 meters and 4 centimeters, (6"69), and my eldest son arrives (21 years) arrives at 2m10cm ...(6"89)

are you dutch? because i am and i am 5'5" my mom 5'6" my brothers are 6'2" and so yeah i think we are a little on the tall side
